Chris Tomek graduated from Wheaton Central High School as one of the greatest all-around female athletes in school history. Chris participated in girl’s basketball and girl’s softball during her time at Wheaton Central. In the early 1980s, the IHSA had not yet implemented girl’s soccer. That did not stop Chris. She simply joined the boy’s team. As a pioneer in the state of Illinois soccer, Chris was a starter on the varsity team both her junior and senior year. She recorded the first goal scored by a female in boy’s soccer history.
Although the IHSA would not permit her to participate in post-season play, Chris Tomek paved the path for the implementation of girl’s soccer five years after she graduated in 1987. As a softball player, Chris was an offensive powerhouse. She ranks among the elite in the IHSA record book in five offensive categories including 8th in single season runs scored. She also led the softball program to a fourth place IHSA finish in 1981.As a basketball player, Chris was a three year varsity letter winner and a member of the 1980-1981 regional championship team.
Upon graduation from Central, Chris attended the University of Iowa on a softball scholarship. She was All-Big 10 her sophomore year. After her sophomore season with the Hawkeyes, she transferred to George Mason University on a soccer scholarship. Like her entire athletic career, Chris excelled at GMU. While she was named to various All-American teams and still ranks in the top 10 in many GMU records, her career was highlighted be captaining the 1985 GMU to a National Championship.
Post-College, Chris was selected to various national teams and semi-pro teams. She continued her efforts as a pioneer in women’s soccer.
Currently, Chris works in the Physical Education Department at Downers Grove North High School.
