Katie Meier was a 1985 Wheaton Central Graduate and left her mark as one of the greatest female athletes in high school and Wheaton community history. Katie was named to Dupage Valley Conference all conference teams 8 times. This represents her participation in girl’s volleyball, girl’s basketball and girl’s softball.
While her contributions in volleyball and softball were outstanding, her true mark was left on her passion, basketball. She was named All State both her junior and senior year and led her team to an IHSA 2nd place finish in 1985. Katie was named the Chicago Tribune “Athlete of the Year” for the 1984-1985 school year. This honor was given to only one athlete. She continues to hold the Tiger record for most career rebounds and finished her career with 1539 points.
Upon graduation, Katie accepted a basketball scholarship to Duke University and quickly made her presence known being named Athletic Coast Conference “Rookie of the Year” and All American. She was also named an All American her senior year. Upon receiving her Duke degree, she headed off to Europe professionally for three seasons. Also post graduation, Katie received many honors from Duke University and the ACC including induction in the Blue Devil Hall of Honor, inclusion on the 50th Anniversary ACC Team and being named as one of 12 ACC Tournament Legends.
Katie Meier has now made her name in the college coaching ranks. After stints as an assistant coach at both UNC-Asheville and Tulane University, she was the head coach at UNC Charlotte and is currently the head coach at the University of Miami (FL).
